III –El siglo XVIII en España: el plegado Español / The eighteenth century in Spain: the Spanish wave

 

 

El modelo Plegado Español tiene la apariencia de un juego de ondas irregulares que recorren todo el papel. Se producen por la manera de introducir el papel en el baño. Es en la España del último cuarto del siglo XVIII donde se inventa este modelo y donde se realiza de manera informal,  casual, un puro gozo por su espontaneidad como dice el doctor Wolfe. Este modelo ha marcado profundamente la historia del marmoleado, en el capitulo siguiente veremos cómo lo modificaron los marmoleadores ingleses, y por las paredes de esta exposición hay múltiples ejemplos de las variadas formas con que se emplea este modelo en la actualidad. Disfrutemos aquí contemplando una buena muestra de estos papeles en su forma clásica y genuinamente española, números 100 a 112, porque el plegado español quedará para siempre asociado a la época más brillante de las artes del libro español como una de sus realizaciones más afortunadas. 

The Spanish, or Spanish wave pattern, has the appearance of irregular waved lines that cover the whole paper. They occur for the way of laying the paper in the bath. It was in Spain, in the last quarter of the eighteenth century where this pattern was invented and where it was made in an informal, by chance manner, a pure pleasure by its spontaneity as doctor Wolfe says. This pattern has marked deeply the marbling history, in the following chapter we will see how the English marblers modified it, and in the walls of this exhibition there are multiple examples of the varied forms with which this pattern is used at present. Let's enjoy here contemplating a few samples of these papers in their classic and authentically Spanish form, numbers 100 to 112, because the Spanish will remain forever associated to the most brilliant epoch of the Spanish arts of the book as one of its luckiest achievements.

Previamente al marmoleado deben pintarse en el papel con una brocha bandas de color transversales que acentuaran el movimiento del propio modelo.

Previously to the marbling the paper should be covered with transverse bands of colour applied directly with paintbrushes, they increase the movement effect of the pattern.

Iris Nevins publicó un libro donde recoge 12 formas diferentes de hacer el plegado. Hay muchas más, como puede verse en esta exposición, pero el plegado español es el único modelo marmoleado que ha visto publicada una monografía completa en su honor. Este es un ejemplar de la segunda edición. 

Iris Nevins published in 1991 a book where she gathers 12 different ways of making the Spanish. There are many others, as it can be seen in this exhibition, but the Spanish is the only marbled pattern that has a complete monograph made in its honor. This is a copy of the second edition of this work.
